What is
Artificial Insemination?

Intrauterine insemination (also known as artificial insemination) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly into a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilisation.

The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilisation.

What’s involved in IUI treatment?

For many, intrauterine insemination represents a beacon of hope – a gentle yet effective approach to overcoming challenges in conceiving. The IUI procedure, while simpler than some other fertility treatments, can be a significant step filled with anticipation and hope.

The intrauterine insemination procedure looks like this:

Ovulation monitoring

The first step in the IUI process often involves monitoring your ovulation cycle to determine the optimal time for insemination. This may be done through over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits, blood tests, or ultrasound.

Semen collection

On the day of the IUI procedure, a semen sample is collected from your male partner or a sperm donor. This can be done at home or in a clinic, depending on the circumstances.

Sperm preparation

The semen sample undergoes a process called “sperm washing” in a laboratory. This process concentrates the sperm and removes impurities and chemicals in the semen that may cause adverse reactions in your uterus.

Insemination procedure

The actual insemination is a quick and generally painless procedure. A thin, flexible tube (catheter) is inserted through the cervix into the uterus, and the prepared sperm is then injected.

After the procedure

After insemination, you can then resume normal activities after 30 minutes of rest.
About two weeks after the insemination, a pregnancy test is taken to determine if your procedure was successful.
