Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

ICSI FERTILITY

If previous IVF attempts have not resulted in successful fertilisation, your fertility specialist may recommend you consider ICSI. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a specialised
form of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) that is a more direct approach in helping
you achieve a successful pregnancy to term.

With 1 out of 4 ICSI cycles leading to the delivery of a healthy child in Australia, this technique offers a promising option for couples facing fertility challenges. Please contact us today for a
confidential and compassionate discussion about your journey ahead.

What is ICSI?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) involves the direct insertion of a single sperm into the centre of a mature egg by our skilled embryologist.

ICSI is particularly beneficial in cases of poor or low-quality sperm, sperm extracted surgically (TESA), instances where thawed eggs are used, and for couples opting for pre-implantation genetic testing. The process entails the careful selection of a single sperm using a delicate glass needle, which is then injected into a chosen egg. Post-injection, the eggs are cultivated in labelled, sterile culture dishes within an incubator, typically overnight.

What is involved in

The ICSI Procedure?

What is involved in the ICSI procedure?

The Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) procedure is considered minimally invasive, but it does involve some invasive steps:

Ovarian Stimulation

The woman takes medication to make several eggs grow in her ovaries.

Egg Retrieval

These eggs are then collected from the ovaries through a small surgical procedure.

Sperm Collection

Sperm is obtained from the male partner.

Injection

Under a microscope, an embryologist injects a single sperm directly into each egg.

Embryo Development

The fertilised eggs are kept in a laboratory for a few days to develop into embryos.

Embryo Transfer

One or more embryos are placed into the woman’s womb.

After about two weeks, a test is done to see if the procedure was successful and pregnancy has occurred.

Considerations of

ICSI IVF

Considerations of ICSI IVF

ICSI bypasses many of the barriers to fertilisation and can be an effective treatment for couples where male factor infertility is a significant issue or in cases where previous IVF attempts have failed due to fertilisation issues.

If you choose to take this path, you’ll need to keep in mind that if you wish to use a sperm donor, you’ll need to go through a selection and screening process to ensure the donor is a suitable match and to address any legal or ethical considerations.

Cost is another factor. ICSI can be more expensive than traditional IVF due to the additional specialised process of injecting the sperm into the egg.
