What is IVF?

IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation, is a medical procedure used to assist with conception and fertility. It involves fertilising an egg with sperm outside the body, in a laboratory setting. Once the egg is fertilised and develops into an embryo, it is then transferred back into the uterus, with the goal of achieving a successful pregnancy.

IVF is a widely used treatment for various fertility issues and has helped many individuals and couples realise their dreams of parenthood.

What is involved in The IVF Procedure?

The IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) process is a complex and multi-step procedure used to assist with fertility and conception. Here are the stages involved:

Ovulation Induction

The woman takes fertility medications to stimulate the production of multiple eggs. This is monitored through blood tests and ultrasound to track the development of the eggs.

Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure called follicular aspiration is performed to retrieve the eggs from the ovaries. This is usually done under sedation or anaesthesia.

Sperm Collection

On the same day as egg retrieval, a sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a sperm donor.

Insemination & Fertilisation

The retrieved eggs are placed together with the sperm in a laboratory dish to allow fertilisation. In some cases, a single sperm may be injected into an egg in a procedure known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

Embryo Culture

After fertilisation, the embryos are monitored as they grow in the laboratory for several days. The embryologist assesses their development and quality.

Embryo Transfer

One or more of the best-quality embryos are selected for transfer. Using a catheter, these embryos are then placed into the woman’s uterus. This step is usually painless and does not require anaesthesia.

Supporting the Luteal Phase

After the embryo transfer, the woman may be given hormone medications to help support the uterine lining and encourage implantation.

Pregnancy Test

About two weeks after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is done to check if the procedure was successful.

Methods like Ovulation Induction, Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), or even sexual intercourse that aligns with your fertility window, might be sufficient for your treatment needs. However, if you’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months or longer without success, we recommend arranging an appointment at our IVF Mackay clinic.

Egg collection clinics do fill up fast, and the wait may be up to 3 months. Talk to us where we can confirm a more realistic time frame.

How Much Does IVF Cost?

The IVF process involves multiple entities and costs. For one, you’ll need to consider IVF procedure, which includes egg collection and embryo transfer. Bear in mind that Medicare offers a rebate. Additionally, there will be a separate fee for the anaesthetist, and the cost of medications will vary as each patient requires different prescriptions.

For those with health insurance, only the excess applies for the hospital fee. While you don’t need private health insurance, each admission to hospital for egg collection or embryo transfer will then incur an admission fee. FAQs

Eggs are collected through a procedure called transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. A thin needle is inserted through the vagina into the ovaries, guided by ultrasound, to gently aspirate the eggs from the follicles.
Generally, it’s recommended to take a pregnancy test about two weeks after a 5-day embryo transfer. This allows time for the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which indicates pregnancy, to reach detectable levels.
A full IVF cycle typically takes about three weeks from the start of ovulation induction to the egg retrieval and embryo transfer. However, this can vary based on individual response to medication and clinic protocols.
The number of injections required in an IVF cycle varies depending on the specific medication protocol. It typically involves daily injections for about 8-14 days during the ovulation induction phase. The exact number and duration of injections are personalised based on the individual’s response to the drugs.
Most injections are very easy to administer from a prefilled pen or prefilled syringe. The fertility nurses will give training to administer these. Most injections are no more than a small sting.
